The Summer I Turned Pretty is one of those classic YA contemporary romance series that everyone read growing up. The “Summer” series is it’s official series name but I never see it called that.
I read this series back in 2021 and I.. wasn’t impressed. I know this is a very popular series and gets a lot of love so while I didn’t like it, that definitely doesn’t mean you should skip it.

Basically, Belly is pretty now and her childhood friends/crush finally see her because.. she’s pretty? Now she has the hots for both of them and is in the weirdest love triangle ever.

Yes, you do need to read The Summer I Turned Pretty books in order or you will be very lost. But don’t worry, they’re quick and easy reads.

The first book in the “Summer” series (it’s official series name) is The Summer I Turned Pretty, which is generally how the series is referred to versus just the “Summer” series.
Are The Summer I Turned Pretty books the same as the show?
I would say, generally, the books and show are pretty similar but there are some differences. I think most of them are on the more minor side but there are some things in The Summer I Turned Pretty show that aren’t in the books.
Here are some of the differences with as few spoilers as possible (I left out some of the more spoiler-y differences):
- Laurel, Belly’s mom, has a rival author love interest in the show.
- The debutante ball isn’t in the books at all.
- Jeremiah is bi on the show.
- Instead of cigarettes, like in the book, Belly catches Conrad smoking weed.
- Belly’s dad doesn’t come to the beach house in the books.
- There is less teen drinking in the books.
- Susannah (Jeremiah and Conrad’s mom) and Laurel only fight on the show.
Are The Summer I Turned Pretty books worth reading?
Personally, I didn’t like this series. Like, at all. Yes, the covers are extremely beautiful but that’s where my enjoyment ended. I will say though, while I didn’t like them, they’re easy reads and I was entertained.
All that said, this is a popular series so I think it’s at worth giving it a shot. It may not be for me but it is for a lot of other people and you may be one of those people.
